Pete Doherty played a concert in Munich on Saturday at the On3 Festival. Given that Pete Doherty is a complete screw-up, his set went surprisingly well, actually. That is until he started singing the Nazi-endorsed version of the German national anthem “Das Deutschlandlied” which has been banned since WWII. For some reason, German fans didn’t like that. Weird. Pete’s spokesperson apologized for Pete and says he didn’t know. From NME,

“[He] wanted to celebrate his appearance in Munich by assimilating and integrating with the crowd, something he tries do wherever he goes,” she explained.

“He was unaware of the controversy surrounding the German national anthem and he deeply apologises if he has caused any offense,” the singer’s spokesperson continued.

“Peter himself is from Jewish descent and has fought against racism and fascism with numerous organisations including Love Music Hate Racism,” she added. “This is a subject he feels very strongly about.”

What’s more offensive? Pete singing the song or his spokesperson saying he only sang it to assimilate. She might as well have said, “Pete is a Jew and he didn’t want the German Nazis to kill him so he sang their anthem to blend in.” That’s about as offensive as me eating fried chicken next to a group of black people and telling them not to beat me up because I’m just like them.
